Forms of Blueberries

We’re all familiar with fresh blueberries, but did you know that frozen blueberries, dried blueberries, freeze dried blueberries, canned blueberries and blueberry juice and puree are also available? Each has its own set of unique and delicious characteristics!

Fresh Blueberries

Since fresh blueberries are available year round, we can find them in stores no matter the season. Remember, fresh blueberries aren’t just for your morning yogurt or fruit salad; they’re a great addition to savory dishes, like this Blueberry and Butternut Squash Couscous Salad.

Frozen Blueberries

You can buy frozen blueberries in the grocery store, or stock up on fresh in the summer and freeze them yourself; they will last in your freezer for up to six months. Either way, frozen blueberries are a household must-have. For a last-minute dessert, grab some frozen blueberries for this tasty Blueberry Cobbler. They also come in handy for a quick and flavorful sauce to pour over chicken or pork, like in this Blueberry Compote, and as an oatmeal topping.

Dried Blueberries

Dried blueberries are sweet, chewy and wonderfully delicious. They work very well when baking with thick batters, like scones or muffins. They are also the perfect addition to nuts or trail mix, which can be served at a party, or kept on hand as a snack. They also bring a fun texture and intense sweetness to grainy and green salads, which help balance the tangy flavor of vinegar-based dressings. Find them in the produce or snack section of your grocery store.

Freeze Dried & Powdered Blueberries

Freeze dried blueberries are blueberries that have had all off the water extracted from them. They are fun to use, so be sure to give them a try! You can grind freeze dried blueberries into a fine powder and mix them into spice rubs for meat, fish or chicken, sprinkle them on yogurt and stir them into smoothies. They are sweet, yet mildly tart, and give trail mix, cereal and ice cream a nice crunch. Remember, once they get wet, they re-hydrate, so store them in a cool, dry space. Find them online or in the snack section of your grocery store.

Canned Blueberries

Just like frozen blueberries, canned blueberries are a household must-have. They are perfect for whipping up delicious smoothies, like this blueberry blast, and last minute desserts like this berry baked apple, which captures a flavorful combination of sweet and tart. They’re also perfect for kid-friendly recipes. Parents especially know that kids can be picky eaters, so it’s helpful to have easy-to-use ingredients on hand for whipping up fun and tasty treats. Canned blueberries go great with these blueberry fruit pops and blueberry banana boats that your kids are sure to love!

Blueberry Juice & Puree

Use blueberry juice, concentrate or puree when mixing up cocktails and spritzers or making sorbets, popsicles or slushes. Look for blueberry juice in grocery stores, and order puree or concentrate online. For large-scale orders, visit our supplier list.
