BLUEBERRY FAST FACTS
- Botanists estimate that blueberries have been around for more than 13,000 years.
- Blueberry bushes grow to six feet tall.
- A single blueberry bush can produce as many as 6,000 blueberries a year.
- Blueberry bushes can produce fruit for 30 years or more.
- Blueberries do not continue to ripen after they’re picked, so they’re always field-ripened.
- A full cup of medium-sized blueberries contains anywhere from 130 to 190 blueberries.
- The size of a blueberry is not an indicator of sweetness, but color is! Blueberries that have a reddish tinge are not quite ripe and will taste tart.
- Fresh blueberries have a silvery ‘bloom’ on their skin, like plums and grapes. It’s perfectly natural and is a sure sign of freshness.
- July is National Blueberry Month in the U.S.
